When the Delaware State Fair starts Thursday, attendees will be able to participate in a new activity designed to teach them about the central focus of the event - agriculture.
The Fair Scavenger Hunt allows families to search for clues in the animal barns, on equipment row and other buildings.
Holly Porter, a spokesperson for the Ag Department, says the idea is to educate Delawareans on an industry that is vital to the state’s economy.
"We had over a billion dollars in farm sales last year and agriculture has about a $8 billion impact on the state. Those are some pretty big numbers, and a lot people rely on Ag not only for eating purposes but for jobs as well," said Porter.
The scavenger hunt is designed for people of all ages, with entry forms available throughout the fairgrounds.
Porter says she hopes families embrace the chance to have some fun while learning a thing or two.
"If the families could learn just maybe one more thing about Ag they didn’t know, I think that would probably be a big success to us for the first year," said Porter.
As always the fair will feature food, music and competitions. This year’s event features a remodeled plaza and a new wine and beer garden called The Roost.
The Delaware State Fair runs through July 26. More information can be found at the fair's website.
