Delaware teams enjoying Little League success

A pair of First State squads enjoyed the Little League spotlight over the weekend.

Newark National is headed to the Little League Baseball World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania this week. Newark National topped a team from Lionville, PA 8-3 Sunday night to win the Mid-Atlantic regional title and a World Series berth.

It’s only the second time ever a Delaware team has earned a spot in the Little League World Series. A team from Naamans Little League in North Wilmington went to Williamsport in 2003.

Newark National will open World Series play against the Midwest region champs from Iowa Friday night at 8.

Saturday, the District 3 All-Stars from Sussex County won the Big League Softball World Series at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxana. The host team from the First State topped Puerto Rico 11-6 to grab the title in the tourney’s first year in Delaware.

Delaware also hosted the Senior League Softball World Series in Roxanna last week. A team from South Bend, Indiana won that tournament.
