Two companies earn grants to bring jobs to Sussex County

Two companies promising new jobs in Sussex County are getting a financial boost from local government.

Sussex County Council Tuesday approved nearly $140,000 in grants to ILC/Grayling Industries and Atlantis Industries. The two companies plan to bring 145 jobs to the county.

ILC/Grayling Industries will receive $92,000 from the county’s Economic Development Fund to assist moving a portion of its soft goods manufacturing operation from Mexico to Seaford. That move, which also drew a half million dollars from Delaware’s Strategic Fund earlier this year is expected to create 115 jobs.

Atlantis Industries in Milton will get nearly $45,000 for an expansion that add 30 new employees to the 36 already working at the injection molding and tool-making company. Atlantis has been considering relocating its operations.

“These grants are an investment in jobs and an investment in Sussex County’s future,” said County Administrator Todd F. Lawson in a statement. “We believe the County’s contribution, albeit small, will pay big dividends for these job creators and the scores of Sussex County citizens who will work in these operations and spend their paychecks in our community.”

“This County Council has made economic development our No. 1 priority, and these grants today represent the County’s follow-through on that commitment,” President Vincent said in his own statement.

The grants do include “claw-back” provisions if the promised jobs do not materialize.

Sussex County’s Economic Development Fund was established in 2004 to boost local projects and stimulate job creation. It determines grant amounts using a formula approved in 2011 that offers $800 per job created or retained through expansion.
