Dover officially renames streets MLK Boulevard Saturday

The dedication of the new Martin Luther King Boulevard in Dover is Saturday.

The event, which will officially rename a series of roads around Legislative Hall for the slain civil rights leader, was originally slated for King Day on Monday. City officials moved it to Saturday to coincide with the 6th annual MLK parade following a request from Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance.

Dover Public Affairs Coordinator Kay Sass says the ceremony turning Court, William Penn, and Duke of York streets into MLK Boulevard will take place around 12:30.

"We have many guest speakers lined up, representatives from the City of Dover City Council, the mayor, Senator Brian Bushweller will also be in attendance. We have 3 representatives from the IMA, the Inter Denomination Ministerial Alliance, they'll be briefly speaking as well," said Sass.

Sass adds that decision to make the ceremony part of the parade means the parade route is also changing.

"It's gonna happen right after our Martin Luther King Parade, the difference for the parade this year is the route will be reversed, so instead of ending ... or starting at Legislative hall, this year it's going to end at Legislative hall where the dedication ceremony will take place,” said Sass.

The plan to re-designate most of Court Street, Duke of York and William Penn Streets “Martin Luther King Boulevard” was approved last month.

The parade begins at 11 am.
