Power outages persist in the wake of Isaias with one tornado now confirmed in First State

Delaware Public Media

Power outages remain a major issue in the First State, even after Tropical Storm Isaias moved through the area.

Delmarva Power is down to 590 outages in the First State, affecting just under 13,000 thousand customers as of 7:30 Wednesday morning. The Delaware Electric Co-op reports about 300 of its customers also remain without power - down from about 30,000 at one point Tuesday.

The National Weather Service confirms there was at least one tornado in Delaware during Tuesday’s storm that ran through Kent and New Castle Counties.  It was one of six in the region confirmed so far. There was also one in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland, along with 2 in South Jersey and two in suburban Philadelphia.

The National Weather Service said Tuesday it confrmed four tornado sightings statewide in the area of Route 8 and Bennington Street in Dover, on Sandtown Road near Felton, near Route 13 in Smyrna, and along Dumbush Road in Townsend.

Fallen trees on Ann Ave., near Walker Rd in Dover, brought down power lines

High winds have brought trees and other debris on power lines and over roads. The Delaware Emergency Management Agency urges drivers to use caution and look out for fallen trees and downed power lines.

Some roads closed earlier, including sections of Route 1 and I-495, have reopened, but others throughout the state remain blocked.

DART temporarily suspended bus service statewide for a time Tuesday, but restored it by mid-afternoon.
