[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="68144"]

Earlier this month, the state unveiled its Priority Schools plan to provide nearly $6 million over four years to assist six schools all in the city of Wilmington, that are at bottom of proficiency in state testing.

The press conference unveiling the initiative featured school district officials, state lawmakers and Wilmington and New Castle County council members all offering support for the plan.

But since then, as details of the plan have become public, there has been pushback – including from some of those there to laud the plan when it was announced.

This week, State Education Secretary Mark Murphy came to our studios to make his pitch for the plan and answer its critics. (More)

Residents and lawmakers raise a stink over Wilmington compost facility

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="68140"]

Ask anyone living near Peninsula Composting’s Wilmington Organic Recycling Center and chances are they will sum it up in two words: “It stinks.”

The center, on the edge of the Southbridge neighborhood - not far from the Port of Wilmington, wasn’t supposed to smell. At least that’s what Peninsula told the neighbors in 2007 and 2008, when the facility was planned and built.

But over the past few years complaints about the smell have grown – both in number and how far away they are coming from. And DNREC has cited the company three times since August 2011 for a variety of permit violations.

Now with the facility’s permit up for renewal, residents and lawmakers say that renewal should be declined and the plant shut down. Contributor Larry Nagengast stuck his nose into the dispute this week. (More)
