Last week Governor Jack Markell delivered his State of the State address. This week he spent two days trying to explain how he’ll pay for his plans.

Lawmakers raise questions about Gov. Markell’s budget plan

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are digesting the $3.8 billion 2015 budget plan Gov. Markell unveiled Thursday, and some already questions about the proposal.

The Green talked to Senate Minority Whip, Republican Greg Lavelle, and Democratic State Rep. Paul Baumbach to get their first impressions of budget framework laid out by Markell this week.(More)


First State Hispanics face many barriers to mental health care

According to a report from the U.S. Surgeon General, fewer than one in 11 Hispanics with mental health issues contact a mental health specialist.

WDDE contributor Eileen Dallabrida examined what that means in Delaware where Hispanics make up over 8 percent of the population – up from just under than five percent a decade ago.

And The Green talked to clinical psychologist Denise Ziya Berte, vice president of life empowerment at Wilmington Latin American Community Center, about the major challenges to improving mental health care in the Hispanic Community. (More)


History Matters: David Sarnoff Library collection

In this month’s History Matters – produced in conjunction with the Delaware Historical Society - producer Ben Szmidt takes us to Hagley Museum and Library which recently received a $291,000 grant to help catalog the David Sarnoff Library collection, which came to the museum in 2009 when the Sarnoff Library in Princeton, NJ closed.

Szmidt sat down with Hagley Museum Project Archivist David Burdash to discuss the former RCA president, what he left behind and why its significant. (More)


Enlighten Me: Halting the ripple effect of gun violence

It’s called the Ripple Effect. Created by Christiana Care, it takes you to Christiana Hospital’s Level I trauma unit to see what they see when victims of gun violence show up there. Christiana Hospital Trauma Program manager Joan Pirrung spoke with The Green about the film and how it can play a role in addressing gun violence. (More)
