2014 Candidate Conversations: State Treasurer

As part of our election coverage, Delaware Public Media is offering a series of Candidate Conversations. We’ve reached out to all candidates that have filed to run in a statewide race and invited them to sit down with us. Candidates in each race are being asked the same set of questions to allow you to get to know then and compare them.

This week, we continue looking at the state treasurer’s race, sitting down with Green Party Candidate David Chandler, a University of Delaware math professor, and Republican Ken Simpler, a political newcomer and Sussex County businessman who faces Sher Valenzuela in a primary. Valenzuela, a Milford small business owner who lost a bid for Lt. Governor two years ago, declined our invitation to participate. (More)

If your kids aren’t already back in school, they will be next week and that means back-to-shopping. Whether its pencils and pens, clothes and backpacks or any of the other assorted gear, hi-tech or low-fi, parents have a checklist to complete.

To those who may have gotten started, but aren’t quite finished contributor Eileen Dallabrida says you're hardly alone - and there are still plenty of deals out there to be had. (More)

Fort DuPont to showcase coastal resiliency measures

The state’s recently announced plans to develop Fort DuPont go beyond residential and commercial redevelopment as well as preservation of several dozen military buildings dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

As contributor Jon Hurdle tells us, they also include using the 325-acre parcel as a testing ground for ways of ensuring that the river doesn’t flood the homes, offices and educational institutions they hope will revitalize that campus from bigger storms and higher seas that are forecast to threaten Delaware’s coast as a result of climate change in coming decades. Arts Playlist: Top homegrown artists showcased at Biggs Museum

[jwplayer config="jw-audio-only_post" mediaid="66570"]

Since 1980, the Delaware Division of the Arts has awarded fellowships to homegrown talent. Each year, First State artists: painters, photographers, sculptors, writers, musicians and craft artisans are honored with grants and recognition. The fellows are chosen by jurors from hundreds of entries. In a partnership with the DDOA, the staff of the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover invites each year’s Award Winners to the state’s only group exhibition honoring their combined accomplishment. In our Arts Playlist, DPM’s Cathy Carter previews the show- and talks with a few of the folks involved. (More)
