Concerns over oil train safety felt in First State

The debate over the safety of shipping crude oil by rail is playing out across the country at both the state and federal levels. Just last week, the Obama administration released a 203-page proposal detailing new safety standards for shipments of oil on trains – and the public now has 60 days to submit comments on the details of that proposal. The federal government will make a decision on finalized standards by October of next year.
In the meantime, there’s also a local conversation here in the First State. More than 100,000 barrels of crude oil are shipped by rail to the PBF Energy refinery in Delaware City every day, with more on the way.

New policy director offers update on Autism Delaware

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention latest numbers in 2012 - autism spectrum disorders are estimated to occur in as many as 1 in every 88 births.
In the First State, the number of students classified by Delaware public schools as having autism increased 695% between 1991 and 2012 –That’s compared to a 600% increase nationally over that same period.
One of the main resources in the First State for individuals and families affected by autism is Autism Delaware. For well over a decade, the group has been active and growing.
This spring, it welcomed a new Policy and community Outreach Director, Alex Eldreth, who visited The Green recently to talk about the organization and some of the key issues its involved in. (More)
State Auditor examines issues with officials' out-of-state travel

Earlier this week, a report from the State Auditor’s office found several state officials including Gov. Jack Markell and Treasurer Chip Flowers skirted rules for documenting and paying for out-of-state travel expenses.

Arts Playlist: Lewes-focused film poised to reach a wider audience

In this edition of our Arts Playlist, Delaware Public Media’s Cathy Carter chats with Chris Malinowski about his movie, “Yes, Your Tide Is Cold And Dark, Sir.”
In addition to writing and directing, Malinowski scored the independent film and played the lead role.
Shot and produced in the First State, “Yes, Your Tide Is Cold And Dark, Sir” has played film festivals in London, Los Angeles, New Orleans and most recently, in Costa Rica.
Last year the movie won the award for best original idea at New York city’s chain film festival. This month, the film will be released on amazon.com and its soundtrack will be available on iTunes.
“Yes, Your Tide Is Cold And Dark, Sir” can be best described as a surrealist thriller, and Malinowski says in many ways, the movie is a love letter to the town of Lewes. (More)
Enlighten Me: Riding the waves with the RB Surf Boarding School

When most people think of the sport of surfing, they probably picture 10 foot waves off the coast of California, Hawaii or Australia – but believe it or not Delaware has its own surfing community in Rehoboth and the surrounding area.
In this week’s Enlighten Me - Delaware Public Media contributor Rob Kalesse takes us to the Rehoboth Boarding School where Peter Zabowski and Garrett Becker give out surfing lessons as often as the tide rolls in. (More)
