Governor Jack Markell says Delaware can do more to prevent the type of gun violence that occurred over the weekend in Orlando, Florida.
In his weekly address, the governor highlighted the state’s achievements in stopping gun violence, but said more must be done.
“That includes denying those on terrorist watch lists from acquiring weapons and ensuring authorities have significant time to conduct background checks,” he said.
In 2013, the Markell signed into law a bill requiring gun owners to report a lost or stolen firearm. That same year he approved expanding background checks to private gun sales.
Markell also used this week’s address to thank the state’s Muslim community for speaking out against radical Islam.
Delaware will also remain vigilant to ensure protections for the state’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community, Markell said.
