Thought you felt an earthquake in Delaware? Apparently not

USGS

The loud noise and rumbling some New Castle County residents reported on social media Wednesday morning was not an earthquake.

According to a U.S Geological Survey spokesperson, there were no earthquakes in the First State Wednesday .

An earthquake did occur with an epicenter near Clarksville, Maryland a little after 2 a.m. Wednesday morning. But that magnitude 2.1 with a depth of 3.4 kilometers was on the lower end of what is able to be felt and would not have affected Delaware.

The loud noise reported in parts of New Castle County Wednesday morning around 11:30 may have been heard from a planned explosion at the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

The U.S. Army site tweeted out today its plans for a daytime and nighttime firing between 7:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m.

No earthquakes greater than 1.5 magnitude have occurred in Delaware in the past year. The state’s largest measured earthquake was a 4.1 magnitude with an epicenter near Dover recorded in November 2017.
