Go Ape course to reopen this weekend

Go Ape Zip Line & Treetop Adventure at Lums Pond State Park will reopen Friday, Sept. 9.

It’s been closed since Aug. 24 when 59-year-old Tina Werner of Felton died after falling 35-feet from a platform while waiting to descend on a zip line.

The move to reopen the course comes after an independent inspection of it was conducted by the Association for Challenge Course Technology, or ACCT.

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control officials said in a statement that after the inspection they are satisfied that Go Ape continues to meet all industry standards and processes that keep the course operational.

Go Ape released a statement as well, saying in an independent inspection performed on Aug. 30, the final report confirmed all equipment was functional. The inspection concluded “the processes and procedures by Go Ape at Lums Pond State Park are well-conceived, meet applicable industry standards and industry-accepted practices, and are effective in their implementation.”

Go Ape’s investigation found the accident to be caused by participant error.

The new Junior Treetops Adventure course at Lums Pond will open on Saturday, Sept. 10.
