Office of Highway Safety takes DUI checkpoint program statewide

Delaware Public Media

The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS)  announced it will expand its DUI enforcement program to include nearly 100 statewide officers.

Impaired Driving Program Manager Kim Chesser, said the program, called Checkpoint Strikeforce, will be expanded from just a New Castle County program, to include all three counties. “Impaired driving is not something that’s just occurring in New Castle County. The statistics show that it’s across the state,” Chesser said.

According to OHS, more than half of all fatal crashes in Delaware last year involved impaired driving.

Chesser said at least four more Checkpoint Strikeforce efforts are planned for 2016, with 18-20 officers per location.

“We’ll do five checkpoints statewide (each time). We’ll have two in New Castle County, one in Kent and two in Sussex,” said Chesser.

The expansion was made possible by funding from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
