Rising Powerball jackpot could be good for Delaware

Changes in the Powerball algorithm made this fall could increase revenue.

With no winning numbers chosen Saturday night, the current Powerball drawing is inching closer to being one of the top 10 prizes of all time.

The Powerball jackpot now sits at $348 million, putting it in the top 15 U.S. jackpots ever.

If there are no national winners during Wednesday’s drawing, it could crack the top 10. That’s good for the state’s coffers.

State officials say new changes in Powerball game, mean high tickets sales -- and more money for the First State.

In October, the Powerball algorithm was adjusted to make it harder for people to win the top prize. That creates larger jackpots faster, including the biggest jackpot ever - a nearly $1.6 billion prize in January.

Officials say they've already seen those mega-jackpots fuel ticket sales.

Sales since the change have been so strong that the Delaware Economic and Financial Advisory Council (DEFAC), which sets state revenue estimates, added $1.5 million to its lottery revenue estimates for this year and next.

The odds of matching all six Powerball numbers in Wednesday’s drawing is 1 in 292.2 million.  Powerball is played in 44 states – including Delaware - as well as the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
