SBA accepting nominations for 2019 small business awards

The Small Business Administration’s Delaware District Office is looking for local businesses to honor for their efforts.

The SBA in Delaware is seeking nominations for its 2019 Small Business Awards.

Delaware’s SBA director John Fleming says the awards are part of a national SBA recognition program that’s been around since 1963.

“This is a national program. Each state gets to select a small business person of the year. Each of those winners will compete on a national level and during Small Business Week in Washington D.C., one small business is picked as the Small Business of the Year for the nation,” Fleming said.

Fleming says the local winner competes for National Small Business of the Year - and Delaware has had its share of businesses recognized nationally.

“Well, over the years we’ve had award winners like Dogfish Head Brewery, we’ve had Buffalo Wild Wings as a winner as well. Also household names like Dan Ramirez from Papa John’s Pizza. So we’ve had some national winners from Delaware,” said Fleming.

Fleming notes there are other categories, including the Phoenix Awards for Disaster Recovery, the Women’s Business Center of Excellence Award and the Veterans Business Outreach Center Excellence in Service Award.  And nominations are being accepted until January 9t, 2019.

National Small Business Week runs from May 5-11, 2019.

Fleming says the awards and National Small Business Week are a chance to recognize the contributions small businesses make to their local communities - as well as their development of new products or innovative technologies.

He adds the nomination process consists of a completed nomination form and SBA background form.

A link to both of those forms can be found here.
