Delaware to have a wet, not white, Christmas

Delawareans can expect weather this Christmas to be mild and damp.

Valerie Meola, meteorologist at the National Weather Service center in Mount Holly, New Jersey says that temperatures in some parts of Delaware may reach as high as the upper sixties on Christmas Eve, which will be the warmest day of the week. The unusual warm front is due to low pressure weather traveling through the Midwest.

“There’s a low pressure system that’s moving up through the Great Lakes area. Since we’re on the eastern side of the system we’re going to get more of a southerly flow, which is going to bring some warmer air up into our area,” said Meola.

Meola says that rain often accompanies warm fronts. From Christmas Eve into Christmas Day, precipitation is predicted to be as much as an inch, so drivers traveling during the holidays should take precaution.

“It could be heavy at times, but it does look like primarily rain, with the rain tapering off into Thursday morning and should be cleared out by early morning, early afternoon,” said Meola.

Temperatures are expected to dip down into the fifties on Christmas Day and will head back down to the forties the following week. Winds are expected to be 10 to 15 miles per hour throughout the state, with stronger gusts along the coastal area.
