Wilmington’s Riverfront Development Corporation hopes to start a new tradition this holiday season.
Starting this Saturday, the first ever temporary, open-air ice skating rink will accept visitors at the Justison Landing Green.
Megan McGlinchey, deputy director of the Riverfront Development Corporation, says the rink will provide an experience to Delawareans that can’t be found unless they travel to Philadelphia.
"There’s really nothing else like this in the area, so we think it will be a great amenity for people who live here in our neighborhoods, in the city of Wilmington and the surrounding county," said McGlinchey. "But it also provides a different kind of experience on the riverfront that we haven’t had before."
McGlinchey adds the idea came about when trying to find ways to bring people to the riverfront during the winter months.
"A lot of cities have had success in bringing these outdoor, temporary ice rinks to their towns. So we started, probably about two years, investigating potentially bringing one to Wilmington," said McGlinchey. "Finally all the stars aligned this year, so we’re able to have it open."
The rink will be open every day of the week through February 28.
Tickets will be $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 years and under, with an additional fee for skate rental.
