DelDOT hold 10th annual litter clean-up day

Hundreds of volunteers are expected to be out on Saturday in a effort to beautify area roadways.

This year marks the state’s 10th “Imagine a Litter-Free Delaware Day,” hosted by the Delaware Department of Transportation.

DelDOT spokesman Jim Westhoff says hundreds of Adopt-A-Highway volunteers have signed up to pick up litter but its not too late for others to join the effort.

“If you want to get some exercise and enjoy some nice weather reach out to some people who’ve adopted a road near your home. Just look at the sign and see what group it is and reach out and ask them if they could use an extra hand. I’m sure the answer will be yes,” said Westhoff.

Volunteers will be picking up everything from beer bottles to fast food containers. Westhoff says 2013’s clean up event pulled in quite a haul.

“Last year we had about 600 people participate in the Clean Up Delaware Day and those people picked up about a thousand bags of trash which translates to 5000 cubic feet of litter which is about five school buses full so clearly this is an effort that we need to work on,” said Westoff

Drivers are asked to be mindful of the volunteers, clean up crews will be on both main roads and rural roads as well as local neighborhoods.
