Latest Drug Take-Back Day in First State nets nearly 5,000 pounds of medicines

State officials collected more than 4,700 pounds of unwanted or expired medicine during Delaware's latest Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

29 sites across the three counties accepted prescription and over the counter pills, liquids and creams for disposal during the September 27 event, sponsored by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

Previous take back events have netted over 20 tons of unused, unwanted or expired medicines since May of 2010 - but last month’s event could be the last.

New federal rules will allow voluntary entities to provide collection boxes for year-round disposal.

"Providing continuous drug collection opportunities will prevent unwanted or expired prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands,” said Delaware Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay in a In a statement.

Eligible locations interested in hosting the receptacles can apply with the US Drug Enforcement Agency starting this Thursday.
