The University of Delaware’s annual Coast Day festival attracted thousands to Lewes on Sunday. The theme of this year’s event was the state of weather and climate in Delaware.
Mark Moline, director of UD’s School of Marine Science and Policy, showed off robots his laboratory started using this past spring. The robots allow them to survey bodies of water for effects of sea level rise --- and find lost ships and planes.
“The W.R. Grace over there was a ship over there was a ship off the coast we found that sunk off of Rehoboth right now and it sunk in 1870. And it was really too shallow for ships to see it," said Moline. "We use underwater vehicles to look at environmental problems, issues, and this is really the future of ocean sciences.”
Many exhibitors, like Moline’s robotics laboratory, reminded visitors about the importance of understanding and protecting the environment.
Delaware’s Coast Day festival has been running for 38 years.
