In the weekly Republican message, state Auditor Tom Wagner called attention to the Democratic hold on most of the top offices in the state.

As Delaware’s lone Republican holding statewide office, Wagner says voters should consider the effects of having one party in charge when they cast their ballots in November.

"To me the top issue in the upcoming election is the issue of total one party control," said Wagner. "The state of Delaware is totally controlled by one party, with the exception of your state auditor.

Wagner, who has served as auditor for more than 20 years, highlighted his tenure in the office, including steering it through an increased budget and staff cuts.

Wagner will face off against former state Democratic Party executive Brenda Mayrack on November 4.

Full text of State Auditor Tom Wagner's GOP message

Hi, I’m State Auditor Tom Wagner.

"It’s been my honor to be your state auditor for the last 20 + years. In that time I’ve seen the state budget go from $800 million to over $3.8 billion dollars. In that time I’ve had my office's budget cut by over half. No other state agency has had those kind of cuts.

"But you know, through all of that, we still managed to fill our office with CPA’s and certified fraud examiners where prior there had been none. Through hard work, innovation, and technology we’ve managed to put together a great staff doing great audits to a professional standard. We still have a one 100% conviction rate of cases prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney or the Attorney General’s office. And quite frankly, I think we have an auditor’s office that any state would be proud to call their own.

"We have one issue in Delaware, and that is that the state is totally controlled by one party with the exception of me--your State Auditor. One party control, history has shown, leads to nothing positive. We need to maintain the checks and balances in State Government. In a recent survey, by the Center for Public Integrity, Delaware got a C-. We got one A, your State Auditor’s office.

"I’m Tom Wagner, your State Auditor. Have a great day."
