Flowers offers vague endorsement in State Treasurer's race

Outgoing state Treasurer Chip Flowers will not outright support a candidate to take his seat.

Flowers teased an endorsement on social media Wednesday, but in an email to supporters Thursday, Flowers simply outlined qualifications and qualities he says he feels the next treasurer should embody.

That includes having the financial education and experience to manage the state’s $2 billion cash portfolio.

Before dropping out of the race, Flowers criticized his primary opponent – now Democratic nominee - Sean Barney for coming from a political rather than financia background.

Barney’s Republican opponent Ken Simpler is a former international hedge fund manager, while currently serving as a chief financial officer for a hotel development company.

Flowers dropped his reelection bid in August after a former deputy accused him of harassment. Police later filed no charges.
