Busy Labor Day weekend caps strong summer season at Delaware beaches

Another beautiful weather weekend made a lot of beach business owners happy over the Labor Day weekend.

Hotels and motels were at 90 percent occupancy and beach restaurants also reported brisk business for the three-day holiday weekend.

In addition, Carol Everhart, President and CEO of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, says the rental market was up considerably this summer.

"So that was a surprise. We did not anticipate those rentals being as increased as they were," said Evrhart. "I’m sure that the weather always plays a part and I’m sure it played a part this summer but you know those week long rentals are booked well in advance, that may be in part due to the fact that, weather again, we had a terrible winter. "

Delaware’s State Parks also did a booming business this summer. Last week, state officials reported an overall six percent jump in daily entrance revenues for June and July.

Everhart adds Delaware’s beach towns are now gearing up for what she expects to be a busy Fall.

"And part of the reason for that high visitation into act two, the September, October, November, is that there is just one event after another, there's always something going on so we’re very fortunate in that there’s over 20 million people within a two and a half hour, three hour drive of us,” said Everhart.

Some of those autumn events include the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, the 25th Annual Sea Witch Festival and the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. The Slam Dunk to the Beach holiday high school basketball tournament is also scheduled to return to Cape Henlopen high school this December the week between Christmas and New Year's Day.
