Sussex Co. country music festival on back burner

Dewey Beach businessman Alex Pires has shelved his plans for a local country music festival for now.

Sussex County Council accepted Pires’s request to withdraw the proposal by a 4-1 vote Tuesday.

He had intended to use a 500-acre property east of Georgetown, but ran in to opposition from residents who argued the county’s infrastructure couldn’t support the event.

The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission recommended nixing the plan earlier this month, saying Pires didn’t provide enough information.

The letter sent from Pires’ attorney, Stephen W. Spence, to the Council said his client did not know so much information would be required so early on in the process.
