Revenge porn bill advances out of House

House lawmakers Tuesday unanimously approved legislation outlawing “revenge porn”.

The practice involves former partners distributing intimate photos or videos, sometimes with identifying information, without consent.

The bill received significant pushback from the state Public Defender’s office and the American Civil Liberties Union during the committee process where it was tabled for months.

They argue that the legislation needs to specifically require prosecutors to prove malicious intent, which it currently lacks.

ACLU officials say they’ll sue the state should it be enacted into law based on the organization’s First Amendment concerns.

It now heads to the state Senate.
