Mayor Dennis Williams has settled on Wilmington’s next police chief, hiring Bobby Cummings to run the city’s Police Department.
Cummings is 29 year veteran of the Wilmington Police force, and has served as interim chief since Christine Dunning left to take a job with New Castle County in January.
Williams’ office says Cummings was selected from a pool of over 50 applicants developed during a nationwide search.
“Bobby’s leadership, experience, and strong community ties make him uniquely qualified for this important position,” said Williams in a statement. “We interviewed a number of candidates with impressive credentials, and Bobby easily stood out. He is the best person for the job, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead to provide increased safety to the citizens of Wilmington.”
Cummings’ selection comes despite a vote of no confidence last month month from Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 1 that represents Wilmington police.
Cummings’ tenure as chief begins Friday.
