State to purchase and protect Sussex Co. forestland

Delaware Forest Service announced on Wednesday that it will be purchasing and permanently protecting 370 acres of Sussex County forestland in the next year.

The purchase is part of a joint effort between the State of Delaware, the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Legacy Program and several non-profits known as the “Green Horizons Project” that was a 10-year program started in 2004 to save trees from future development.

The 1.35 million dollars worth of Sussex Forestland is divided into 4 parcels and will be added to the 12,400-acre Redden State Forest in Georgetown.

To date, the Green Horizon’s Project has protected over 4,000 acres of forestland providing the public with cleaner water, opportunities for recreation and hunting, and places for wildlife habitat and observation.
