Salem reactor extends shutdown due to broken parts

PSE&G’s Nuclear Power Facility in Salem has extended its scheduled refueling and maintenance shutdown in the Unit 2 reactor after finding broken bolt heads in part of the reactor's coolant pumps.

The damage could compromise the performance of the industrial strength pumps that move thousands of gallons of water per minute into the nuclear reactor.

PSE&G officials have decided to extend the scheduled shutdown indefinitely to allow one of their contractors to assess the damage and make any necessary repairs.

This shutdown extension comes just one week after Salem’s Unit 1 reactor experienced an automatic shutdown due to a faulty wire.

Unit 1 resumed operation on Sunday.
