Kent County is reminding residents that May is Building Safety Month nationwide.
The month is an effort by the International Code Council to increase awareness of building safety in Central Delaware and elsewhere during May each year.
The inspections administrator for the Kent County Department of Planning Services Scott Tanner urges residents to take advantage and get a building inspection. He says he and his staff are on hand to help those with potential building code issues and provide inspections.
"It’s basically what we do all year round, really what this building safety month is, is the idea of bringing awareness to the general public as far as what the code enforcement officer is actually doing for them throughout the year," said Tanner.
Tanner adds residents should be aware of the ease of getting building inspections in Kent County and beyond.
"Kent County is unique in the fact that the state has mandated that the state actually provides plumbing inspections. They’ve also mandated for the entire state a third party inspection agency -- there are five third-party agencies that will provide inspections for every structure in the state," said Tanner.
Tanner adds that improper plumbing or electrical wiring can cause sickness or fire -- and that buildings must a minimum code standard inspection before they can finish construction.
