Holiday themed slapstick, the world premiere of a new comedy and a retelling of a theater classic are among the productions that will be staged in Wilmington later this year. The Delaware Theatre Company recently released it’s lineup for the 2014-2015 season and it will kick next fall with the help of a three-time Emmy Winner.
DTC’s Executive Director Bud Martin says the Pulitzer Prize winning play “Love Letters,” will likely to be a sell out.
“Some people may remember that we did a fundraiser with the Governor and First Lady, Jack and Carla Markell this past November but we’re going to do it for three weeks [this time]," said Martin. "It will open our season and it will star Michael Learned. She was here last year and did “The Outgoing Tide” and she loved it here and wanted to come back and I asked her what she wanted to do.”
Learned, best known for her role as the matriarch on the hit television show “The Waltons,” will star in “Love Letters” beginning in September.
The new season will also include the pre-Broadway run of a show based on an award winning novel.
“Because of Winn Dixie,” features original music by Tony Award winner Duncan Sheik, the composer for “Spring Awakening,” the 2007 winner of the Tony for Best Musical.
Wilmington audiences will get a sneak peek of the new musical before it opens on Broadway next year.
Martin says the musical adaptation of the best selling novel will be a family friendly production.
"You know it’s tough to find something that’s intelligent and smart enough for adults but will really appeal to children and Winn Dixie is a rescue dog that this little girl who’s very lonely finds at a Winn Dixie," said Martin. "It’s a great story about several different people that she meets along the way because of the dog.”
“Because of Winn Dixie” will conclude the 2014-2015 season at The Delaware Theatre Company next April.
The current season wraps up this month with the Fats Waller musical, “Ain’t Misbehavin.”
