Smyrna School District referendums up for vote Saturday

Residents of Smyrna School District go to the polls Saturday vote on two tax increase proposals.

The first would hike property tax rates to boost its operating budget. It would cost about an extra $85 a year for the average property valued at $200,000.

District officials say the money would go towards new school security cameras, computer maintenance and student support specialists.

The other measure would authorize the district to issue $4.8 million in bonds to help match state dollars for several capital infrastructure improvements.

Property tax rates would also increase by varying figures over 20 years if approved.

District patrons haven’t approved an operating referendum since 2004. Since then, district officials say the student population has grown by 58 percent.

Polls are open until 8 pm Saturday at Smyrna Elementary School, the Ruritan Club of Kenton, and Smyrna Middle School.
