Delaware State Univ. offering a variety of Black History Month events

Delaware State University is hosting a number of events in celebration of Black History Month.

The school has four events scheduled throughout February. The first, on the Feb. 11th, is a screening of 16th and Philly, a documentary about a Philadelphia pickup basketball league that produced a number of college and professional players from filmmaker and DSU alumnus Isaiah Nathaniel

DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes says it is important to highlight the variety of contribution of African Americans have made to this country’s history.

"There’s a lot of black history stories out there, just like there are a lot of other American stories," said Holmes. "This gives us an opportunity to focus on a lot of those stories, a lot of important figures that have helped to make this country, that have brought advancements, in all kinds of areas, including civil rights, including medicine, including technology."

Other Black History Month events this month include an interactive tour of the historic Loockerman Hall on February 13th. Stories of the students that lived there will be reenacted.

Holmes adds he hopes the university's efforts this month help build a greater interest black history year round.

"I must tell you, I am of the opinion that Black History Month should be every month. And just like we celebrate American history throughout the year, so should we do with black history," said Holmes.

There's more information on DSU's Black History Month events on the university's website.
