CDC Director non-committal about study of Wilmington shootings

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials remain mum on the City of Wilmington’s pleas for a solution to what has been a year of record-breaking gun violence.

CDC Director Tom Frieden wouldn’t comment on a request from Wilmington City Council to study the spate of shootings plaguing the area all year.

Frieden attended a diabetes prevention roundtable discussion in the city this morning [Friday].

He says his agency will consider the request.

“We certainly look at every request we get from any jurisdiction. CDC fundamentally only goes where we’re invited and then we work with the local entities to see what’s possible to better understand and address health problems.”

The News Journal reports a record 150 people have been shot in Wilmington as of December 20th, with 18 of those victims killed.

That surpasses the previous record of 142 set in 2010.
