Local basketball fans will have the rare opportunity to see the Philadelphia 76ers play in their own backyard this fall.
The Sixers announced Friday they will play a preseason contest at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center October 11th against the Boston Celtics.
The move is part of the Sixers’ new commitment to the First State. Earlier this year, the team announced it is placing its minor league affiliate in the NBA Development League at the Bob. The Delaware 87ers are slated to debut in Newark this November.
“This game is about the Sixers’ and the Sevens’ continued commitment to Delaware and the great basketball fans across the state. We look forward to becoming a part of the fabric of the community and are proud to contribute to its vibrant corporate growth,” said Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil in a statement. “Showcasing this classic rivalry at the Bob Carpenter Center at the University of Delaware will be an incredible opportunity to show our appreciation to Sixers fans in Delaware, while helping build Sevens fans of tomorrow."
We’re thrilled to welcome the Sixers to campus for a preseason game. What a great opportunity to experience an NBA powerhouse match-up so close to home. With the 87ers playing their season at the Bob, I know the Sixers’ game is just the first of many exciting nights we’ll have there,” added University of Delaware President Patrick Harker in his own statement.
Information on tickets for the Sixers-Celtics will be announced later.
The Sixers also hope to build buzz about the 87ers arrival this week when they hold “87ers Day” in Delaware Wednesday. The teams will have events and giveaways in Wilmington and Newark between 9am and 2:30pm to help introduce the D-League team to fans.
"The series of events will be a great way for residents and businesses in Delaware to grow familiar with our brand, get their hands on team merchandise and have some fun as we tip off what we hope will become an annual tradition throughout the state," said Delaware 87ers President Aaron Moszer in a team release.
