DSU launches review after resignation of dean with criminal record

Delaware State University announced Thursday it is auditing a department’s finances after its former dean resigned last week.

Dr. Frederick Asinor stepped down after it was revealed he’d previously been convicted of forgery, embezzlement and passport fraud. The forgery and embezzlement charges came while he worked at Clemson University.

The school is also reexamining its hiring policies, including how background checks are conducted.

“Upon Dr. Asinor’s resignation, we began a thorough internal process review of all hiring policies and procedures. The University has also initiated an audit of the budget and financial transactions from July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013, the period of Dr. Asinor’s tenure,” DSU president Harry Williams said in a statement.

Williams says all findings will be presented to the university’s Board of Trustees.

Meanwhile, Williams appointed Dr. Marsha Horton as the interim dean for the College of Education, Health and Public Safety.

I wanted an interim dean appointed as soon as possible because the continuity of our academic programs is so critically important,” said Williams in his statement.

Horton most recently worked at Wilmington University with prior jobs at DSU and the Delaware Department of Education.

She will assume her duties August 19th.
