Blood Bank of Delmarva seeks summer donations

The Blood Bank of Delmarva is asking potential donors to make an extra effort to give blood at this time of year

The blood inventories are often low during the summer months and Blood Bank of Delmarva spokesperson Christine Serio says that can strain the organization’s ability to supply the 16 regional hospitals it serves.

“We are the sole supplier of blood products to all the hospitals throughout the state of Delaware, Eastern Shore Maryland and into Virginia. To meet those needs and help save the lives of 20,000 patients a year we need 350 donors a day on average,” said Serio.

Serio add the Bood Bank is hoping local companies can help fill the gap.

“We have a program going on right now, the Summer Blood Challenge, which is in it’s 11th year. It’s kind of a friendly competition among companies and organizations that compete to earn points by giving blood and there are all kinds of prizes they can win," said Serio.

The Blood Bank has three Delaware donation centers in Christiana, Wilmington and Dover. It also holds over 30 mobile events to help make it easier to give.
