The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal accident involving a DART bus near the Rehoboth Beach Park and Ride.
Police say 37-year-old Deepak Chatani of Rehoboth Beach walking his bicycle on Coastal Highway by Shuttle Road was struck from behind by the bus Thursday night around 9:30.
The Chantani was transported from the scene by local EMS to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. According to the police, the man was not carrying a flashlight while walking in the roadway, nor was one attached to his bicycle.
The driver of the bus was immediately taken to a local medical facility for drug and alcohol testing. The bus he was operating was empty at the time and was out of service.
“Everyone at Delaware Transit Corporation deeply regrets this loss of life and our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this individual,” said DELDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt in a statement.
