Congressman John Carney is co-sponsoring a bill that seeks to highlight American-made products and prompt manufacturers to increase domestic production. The bi-partisan “Made In America Act” calls for the creation of a voluntary, standardized labeling program to help consumers identify the extent to which products are made in the US.
“This legislation would require that the commerce department in in consultation with the FDC develop an America Star Program, an America star labeling program -- similar in some ways to the energy star program that labels appliances for energy efficiency,” said Carney
Carney believes the America Star Program would have two major benefits to both Americans and the economy.
“One, it will help consumers like myself who want to know and try to buy products that are made here,” said Carney. “And secondly, it will reward what I think is an amazing new trend where companies are starting to insource, starting to bring back jobs, manufacturing jobs, production jobs to the US.”
Carney hopes the labeling program will further promote the return of manufacturing jobs to the US. The program is budget neutral as operating costs would be covered by fees collected from participating companies.
