Delaware to feel the heat the remainder of the holiday weekend

After weeks of dealing with heavy rains, Delawareans will feel the heat the rest of the Fourth of July weekend.

Temperatures across First State will reach the lower 90's, considered normal for early July, but it will feel much warmer. High humidity will push the heat index, how hot it feels, close to triple digits.

National Weather Service Staff Meteorologist Mitchell Gaines says the combination of the recent heavy rains and warm temperatures is perfect recipe for high heat indices.

“That’s going to lead to some heat index values, particularly in the urbanized areas of Northern Delaware around that 100 degree mark and that’s when it starts to become relatively excessive for the body to handle,” said Gaines.

Gaines adds there's is likely to be a break in the high humidity until early next week.

“The hottest days are expected to be Saturday and Sunday across our region. Another frontal system may approach the region throughout the early part of the week which may bring in low chances of showers and thunderstorms and will keep the temperatures around the 90 degree mark instead of pushing the low to mid-90s like here this weekend,” noted Gaines.

Gaines adds that the hottest part of each day will be early to late afternoon. People who must venture outdoors are encouraged to seek shade, and drink plenty of water.
