Three Delaware schools will open this fall with brand new state-of-the-art fitness centers.
The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Council awarded A.l. DuPont Middle School in Greenville, Bancroft Elementary in Wilmington, and McCullough Middle School in New Castle fitness centers for developing new and creative ways to promote student physical activity and wellness.
The fitness centers will include strength training and cardio fitness equipment as well as interactive exercise games.
The award includes the design, delivery and installation of the equipment within the existing building structure of each school.
National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Council officials said winning schools displayed the ability to use the resources they had immediately available to create exercise programs. For example, some schools created exercise programs that involved running up and down stairwells; other schools that couldn’t provide safe outside environments for physical activity, created designated space inside for exercise. Winning schools also excelled in creating large community outreach programs such as Family Fitness Nights.
The National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Council was created to help improve academic performance and increase the overall quality of young lives by establishing patterns of regular exercise and promoting nutritional education.
