The National Transportation Safety Board has released the preliminary findings of its investigation into the January 13th plane crash near Dover that killed Bayhealth orthopedic surgeon Clifford Turen.
The NTSB report says Turen declared a fuel emergency and was attempting to land at Dover Air Force Base when his plane crashed on the foggy Sunday night.
Turen was scheduled to land at Summit Airport near Middletown. After an unsuccessful approach there, he made additional attempts to land in Salisbury, Md., Georgetown, and at Cheswold’s Delaware Airpark but failed each time.
The report says Turen was in contact with the Dover Air base tower before going down around 6:40pm. The plane was found nearly two hours later.
The N-T-S-B found there was substantial damage to the fuselage and wings, but no post-crash fire.
