Delaware State University welcomed The King Center Imaging Project to its campus in Dover Monday.

The display features digitized letters, speeches, and personal writings by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Delaware State is the first stop on the exhibit’s nationwide tour. DSU President Dr. Harry Williams says he’s honored to have the school serve as the launching point for the tour.

“To have it here and also to have it here in the MLK center, that really adds a lot of pride to my heart, in terms of just, the excitement around that. And knowing that our students will benefit from that—and it’s what we should be doing,” said Williams.

JP Morgan Chase provided creative and financial assistance to the project, which aims to increase access to the King Center collection through the digitized documents.

Williams believes the project will allow DSU students and others who can’t easily travel to the project’s home base in Atlanta, Georgia to have a chance to view these significant windows into history.

“We’re hoping this will not only provide our students an opportunity but it will provide the citizens of Delaware an opportunity to come and spend some time [with these documents]," said Williams. "It’s always nice to study history so that you can learn some lessons from it, so we don’t repeat anything that we may have failed during that time, so it’s important, very important.”

The online archive features several Delaware related items, including a letter to then Senator Caleb Boggs thanking him for bipartisan unity in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The exhibit is at DSU through Friday and is open 11 am to 8pm each day.
