The severe flu season has claimed its first life in Delaware.
The state’s Division of Public Health reports an a two month old infant female from New Castle has died from the illness.
Last week, DPH officials said flu in the First State is now considered "widespread." Area hospitals also reported cases of flu were rising and in some cases straining resources.
Officials have noted that children seem more susceptible to this strain of the flu. As of January 5th, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had received reports of twenty influenza-associated pediatric deaths across the country. The CDC does not track adult influenza deaths.
Public health officials are urging all persons to frequently wash hands with soap or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Also, anyone six months and older is being advised to be vaccinated for the flu.
