Dennis Williams officially took the reins of the state’s largest city Tuesday morning.
Williams, a Democrat and former State Representative, was sworn in as Wilmington’s 55th mayor.
“This is a new day. This city will change. We will be an open government. We will listen. We will work with people. We will not put ourselves on a pedestal. Look for the future because you are going to see the future in this administration,” said Williams.
Williams took the oath of office at East Side Charter School, a site he chose to honor his Wilmington roots.
“I came to east Side Charter for a simple reason. About 53 years ago, I walked through these doors, my brothers and I, when it was a cold, rainy day, but we were so proud when this school opened up because this school belonged to the kids from the Northeast part of Wilmington Delaware and the Riverside housing projects,” said Williams.
In addition to celebrating his first day in office, Williams also turned 60 years old today and those at the swearing in sang “Happy Birthday” to the new mayor following his inauguration.
But Williams said he would enjoy his birthday cake in his office, part of his promise to get to work immediately for Wilmington residents.
Williams delivers his inaugural address tonight at the Baby Grand around 8pm as part of the City Council Inauguration which begins at 6:30.
Williams succeeds the city’s first ever three term Mayor, James Baker.
