This week, Governor Jack Markell talks about child abuse and efforts in the First State to combat it. Markell details a month-long campaign designed to help people recognize the signs of child abuse and to report suspected cases of abuse.

Full text of Governor Jack Markell’s weekly message:

Our children rely on us for so much – guidance, support, safety. We have a tremendous opportunity to be a positive force as they navigate through childhood and build a foundation for their future. But it’s more than an opportunity – it’s our responsibility. Children look to us to be role models, to make good choices, to be champions for what’s best for them. This responsibility is most critical when it comes to their safety and well-being.

Last year in Delaware, over 14,000 reports of child abuse, neglect and dependency were received by the Division of Family Services. That is a horrifying number. But even more troubling is that research shows a majority of child abuse incidents go unreported.

This month - April - is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child advocates across the country and here in Delaware are focused on raising awareness about the signs of child abuse and the importance of reporting suspected abuse to the 24- hour report line. This month-long campaign will urge citizens to – quote - see the signs and make the call.

Signs of abuse can vary. A child may have unexplained injuries or suddenly seem anxious or depressed. He or she may have difficulty concentrating in school or engage in high-risk activities such as drug and alcohol use. The state is urging adults to pay attention to these signs and report any suspected abuse or neglect to 1-800-292-9582. The line is available 24 hours a day.

We Delawareans pride ourselves on our sense of community. Regardless of differences in opinion, when it comes to strengthening our great state, we come together to do what’s best for one another. What better way to make Delaware stronger than to protect our youngest citizens?

By keeping them safe from harm, they’ll be better able to succeed in school, establish a greater sense of self-worth, actively pursue their passions and become productive, caring adults. One person can make a call, make a difference. But it takes a collective effort to protect our children, stop child abuse and, in turn, keep Delaware, moving forward.
