Full text of Governor Jack Markell’s weekly message:

Entrepreneurs are the backbone of American innovation and growth.   At the Governor’s Entrepreneurial Business Conference, we celebrated that spirit of entrepreneurship – the drive and energy that’s the hallmark of small business owners across our state.  People with the courage and certainty to know that they can be – need to be– their own boss….who understand both the power of an idea and the rigorous and relentless commitment needed to turn that idea into a compelling, competitive advantage.

We brought the entire Governor’s Cabinet to share and to learn – because if government is going to be a partner in and not an obstacle to growth – we need to keep working together to get people working.  Quality transportation, a quality workforce, quality schools and a quality environment – some of the important, and interrelated ways government can help improve economic opportunity and activity.

Entrepreneurs who came said they left having met some new business partners in other entrepreneurs.

With the launch of a new effort called Mymarketplace.Delaware.Gov, We made clear the state wants to be partners too.  To make it easier for small businesses to bid on work; to find opportunities for small business to do more business with the state, and  given our desire to get the best value for your tax dollar – to help the state with a new effort on the site called “I Found it Cheaper!” which is where you can submit real prices for real products and tell us how and where the state might get a better deal.

There was – and is – a common thread among entrepreneurs -  whether it was an IT company with five employees -  a clothing company making high-end products with more employees or my Director of Economic Development Alan Levin, who built Happy Harry’s.

They each had a spark – a passion to build something of their own-  to put others to work making their vision and their company real – to prove, again and again –a promise to their customers and to themselves that they can, through hard work and focus, deliver.

Whether it’s through your bidding at mymarketplace.delaware.gov, or submitting suggestions through ideas.delaware.gov or through any of the hundreds of visits we make to companies to hear first hand from Delaware employers and entrepreneurs – we want to learn from you how to be better partners as we work, together, to keep Delaware, moving forward.
