The Delaware Symphony presents a pair of Explorer Concerts for kids next week in Wilmington and Dover, designed to introduce kids to the orchestra and spark an interest in music.
“We have kids that come in from all around just to experience the orchestra, many of them, if not all of them, for the first time," said the orchestra's CEO, J. C. Barker. "It's a fun concert. It's not very long, it's upbeat, and we try to make it interesting.”
Barker says the concerts are a big hit with young audiences.
“I love being at these concerts because, to see the kids that have never seen or heard anything like this before and watch their faces, it's just incredible," he said.
Barker says the concerts are not only rewarding for kids, but also for the musicians in the orchestra.
“It's just exciting for musicians to see the excitement of these young people for what they do," he said. "It's a type of validation, if you will.”
The orchestra will perform two concerts at The Grand in Wilmington on May 20 and a third concert at Dover High School on May 21.
