Wilmington University gains approval to build tall buildings on proposed satellite campus

Delaware Public Media

Wilmington University has been working to gain approval to build a satellite campus at the southwest corner of Concord Pike and Beaver Valley Road since last November.

Thursday night, the University got past a significant hurdle, says Wendie Stabler, an attorney for the institution. The New Castle County Board of Adjustments re-voted to allow Wilmington University to build structures taller than 40 feet. This comes after the same vote on June 11th was rescinded because a board member decided to change her vote from a yes to an abstention.

"We’re moving forward with the design of the buildings, and the detailed engineering plans. We’re also still completing the traffic impact study and working with DelDot to make sure the access points are located in the safest places," said Stabler.

The project to build on these 41 undeveloped acres has been somewhat controversial as residents and nonprofit groups have raised concerns about increased traffic and loss of green space.

Stabler says she anticipates that by next spring or summer the project will have final record plan approval.
