The Caesar Rodney School District is suspending two students responsible for a racially offensive Facebook post depicting the school mascot.
The students face disciplinary action up to and including expulsion.
“While the act of these individuals was reprehensible and will not be tolerated, I wish to commend our students and our community for their support during this challenging time.” said Superintendent Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald in a statement.
Shortly after the post with the mascot holding a piece of paper with a racial slur on it appeared Wednesday and started making the round on social media the district said in a statement it was “distressed that our mascot would be used in such a manner and we strongly disavow the statement. The Caesar Rodney School District and Caesar Rodney High School consider racial slurs reprehensible and are deeply disturbed by the content of this message.”
Delaware State Police helped the district identify the students involved.
The school says any decision to charge the students criminally would be made by the state Attorney General’s office.
The AG's offcie released a statement Thursday night saying that won't happen right now.
"This type of conduct is abhorrent and the school should certainly pursue disciplinary action. Based upon information presented to the Delaware Department of Justice today, there is insufficient evidence to pursue criminal charges at this time," said the statement from DOJ spokeswoman Nicole Magnusson. "DOJ will assess the results of the full investigation, including police reports and interviews, and any additional evidence that may be gathered before reaching a final conclusion on charging.
