Cardboard boat race sheds light on water conservation

Makeshift pirates are taking to the Nanticoke River this August for of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources annual Recycled Cardboard Boat Regatta.

Homemade boats of all shapes, sizes and seaworthiness will jostle for position in the 200 yard race, but DNREC's Phil Miller said it's all for a good cause.

"And basically what it aims to do is bring more water quality oriented events, workshops and recreational opportunities to the Nanticoke Watershed," Miller said.

The race is part of DNREC's Reclaim Our River Project.

"We get to talk about some of the water quality issues in the area and get to point out some of the beautiful local wildlife," Miller said.

Boats are built completely out of recycled cardboard and can be entered in youth, individual, teen, family and business categories.

The Regatta is August 5th at the Nanticoke River Public Marine Park.
